Civil War
In our most recent unit, we learned about the Civil War. As a class, we discussed the causes of the war and how are united country nearly fell apart. Along with the negatives of the war, we learned about the good things that happened and how important people didn't let the war get out of control.
Causes of the Civil War
- Slavery - Slavery was the largest cause of the Civil War by far. At least one fourth of the Southerners had slaves. They were extremely racist and didn't see African Americans as real people. The North opposed this thought and thought that all men were created equal.
- Presidents - Our previous presidents were good presidents, some were better than others *cough cough George Washington* but they were good all the same. However, none of them did anything to stop slavery. They thought it was just a craze and that it would die out.
- The Missouri Compromise - The Missouri Compromise led to more arguing between the North and the South. However, it was worse since there was a figurative line drawing the "United" States in half. They actually felt like it was a war between Free States and Slave States.
- The Election of 1860 - The Election of 1860 didn't help the fighting either. The Southerners said they would leave the United States if Abraham Lincoln won the election, and he did. This is what officially split us into the Union States and the Confederate States.
The Civil War
The South wanted to become their own country of the Confederate States. They even made their own Constitution which was a complete rip-off of the already created Constitution. The North wouldn't allow them to leave and that is what triggered the war. The Union lost the first two years of the war because they were fighting for the wrong cause and they had horrible generals. Once Abraham Lincoln told us what we were supposed to be fighting for, we ended slavery and we started winning. The surrender took place at Appomattox Courthouse and the South was forgiven by the Northern states.

Why should you fix a problem when it's small? You should fix a problem when it's small because it's easier to fix when it's small rather than when it has become a big problem. It is really common sense. I realize that most people in my community do not do this because it may require a little extra work and they are lazy. But if my community started to fix problems when it was small, they wouldn't procrastinate homework or procrastinate everything. They may even get a job. That would benefit the community and society as a whole by having more hard working people.
